The facts behind Keiskama B&B
The Keiskamma River (also spelled Keiskama River) is a major river in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.
He plays a role in local history and geography.
Geographical data
The river is approximately 263 km long with a catchment area of 2745 km².
It originates in the Amathole Mountains near Mount Thomas, flows through areas such as Keiskammahoek and
Middledrift and flows into the Indian Ocean near Hamburg, between East London and Port Alfred.
Course and tributaries
In its upper reaches, it is fed by tributaries such as the uMnyamana, Cata, and Tyhume. Dams like Mnyamani, Cata, Sandili, and Debe supply drinking water through Amatola Water. The lower reaches flow through bushland to the Keiskamma River Mouth, ideal for fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching.
Historical significance
In the 19th century, the Keiskamma formed the border between the Cape Colony and British Kaffraria, and was also a neutral territory after the Second Border War with the Xhosa. Fort Cox was situated in a bend of the river near Middledrift.
Spelling with one "m"
The river's official name is "Keiskamma River" with a double "mm" (derived from the Xhosa "iNyisikama", which means "beautiful bush").
Why "Keiskama" for the street?
The spelling with one "m" is a common local simplification or variant in Port Elizabeth – probably
For simplicity in pronunciation and naming, without any official historical reason. It does not reflect a formal name change.
but rather an informal adaptation to English/Afrikaans conventions.
